Merlot

Merlot wines bear the name of the grape variety from which they are made. The Merlot vine originated in the Bordelais wine region (also Bordeaux) in southwestern France. Today, Merlot is grown all over the world: In addition to the well-known Ticino Merlot or Merlot from Valais, there is also Australian or Californian Merlot. In the AOC growing region of Bordeaux (protected designation of origin), Merlot is one of six grape varieties that may be used for red wines. The other five varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

Did you know that ...

... from Merlot two styles of wine are born? The international style is implemented worldwide. It involves a long ripening of the grapes, leads to a high alcohol content and a rich, full body. The second style is cultivated almost exclusively in Bordeaux: A lower alcohol content, a less full body, a more accentuated acidity and fresh fruit aromas (raspberry, ripe strawberry) are the result.
