Barolo

King of red wines and red wine of kings

Together with Brunello and Amarone, Barolo is considered one of the best Italian wines. In the form in which it is known today, Barolo originated in the 19th century. In the royal house of Savoy, the Italian red wine was very popular – probably the reason why Barolo is also called the wine of kings and the king of wines. Barolo is a DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin) wine region in Piedmont, northern Italy. Barolo red wine is obtained from the Nebbiolo grapes. Before release, it must age for three years, 18 months of which in oak barrels (botte or barrique). It is best consumed after five to six years of aging.

Did you know that ...

... the tendency towards the rather short aging time of Barolo red wine is relatively new. Until the 1970s, Barolo was aged for 15 to 20 years. Unlike many other red wines, Barolo is not blended. This means that it is vinified from pure Nebbiolo grapes and not blended with other varieties.
