The good is so close

«It's so obvious - and yet only just under a third of Swiss people regularly drink Swiss wine. That's a shame, because there are so many exciting winemakers in our country. In this issue, we are pleased to introduce Micha and Luca Davaz from the Bündner Herrschaft - and we hope that we will be able to make many more talents «from next door» palatable to you in the future. Cheers!»

«Switzerland offers everything that wine lovers desire.» – Micha Davaz

In the case of Bündner wine, you get twice as much.

Anyone in Maienfeld who lets their eye wander over the Falknis immediately imagines Heidi roaming the forests and fields with the shepherd boy Peter. The Bündner Herrschaft (Region) represents the Switzerland that you typically see on postcards. Yet just as the tedium sets in, a clatter disrupts the stillness. This droning of motorcycles is a well-known noise in this area, yet it's still invigorating and thrilling. Welcome to the Davaz Brothers in Fläsch. The two Bündner natives want to breath new life into the Swiss wine scene – something like how their motorcycles once woke the inhabitants of Fläsch and Maienfeld from their daydreams and brought them back to the here and now. «Our goal is to produce innovative Swiss wines of excellent quality, and to make the broadest possible clientele more familiar with it,» says Micha. He studied business administration in St. Gallen and has been managing the Salis wine store since 2018. His brother Luca is a wine technologist and is responsible for vinifying their own wines. «We complement each other very well,» they both say, and anyone who sees them believes this right away. Nowadays, however, the biker boys no longer attract attention with noise and fumes. Instead, they do so through something completely different: fine wine. In other words, Gamaret and Pinot instead of Hercules and Pony. What has stayed the same, however, is their youthful exuberance as well as their desire to try new things and expand their customer base.

Over the last 15 years, the image of Swiss wine has substantially improved. The new generation can build upon this and does so with great confidence and creativity. Despite this, just over a third of Swiss Germans regularly drink domestic wines. Nevertheless, the trend is increasing: «Young people especially are increasingly wanting to discover regional wines,» says Micha. For many years now, anyone looking for robust wines with an intense color and alluring fruit sweetness no longer has to resort to the wines of Southern Italy. So why let your eye wander? The good stuff is just a motorcycle ride away.

They want to match the Burgundy

It has long since ceased to be just the people of Graubünden who are firmly convinced that, apart from Burgundy, the Herrschaft has the best terroir for Pinot Noir. «If you consider the price-performance ratio, we are even better than Burgundy,» says Micha Davaz emphatically. The cornerstone of success is the chalky, permeable soils, which have a high percentage of Bündner Schiefer. The other important ingredient is the ideal climate, which is characterized by plenty of sunshine, the Foehn wind, and the enormously important, large temperature differences between day and night.

Micha and Luca - together with their four sisters - grew up on the vineyard that their grandfather founded in the 1970s. It is located between Fläsch and Maienfeld, quite remote and in the middle of the vines. An idyll? «We had to lend a hand at an early age, but we also had fun doing it. For example, I was already driving the tractor up and down the vineyard at the age of 10. Later, as a teenager, I didn't always like it when I had to be ready early in the morning on Saturdays or during school vacations,» confesses Micha. As tedious as it was to have to trot to the vineyard after going out, the two are grateful today for the wealth of experience they were able to gain. They have Pinot Noir in their blood and are deeply rooted in the unique terroir. Since 2016, von Salis has been vinifying individual vineyards from the Bündner Herrschaft - with great success. In 2018, for example, they won the coveted Grand Prix du Vin Suisse in the undisputed supreme discipline of Pinot Noir. So the «Töfflibuebe» are definitely in the fast lane!

The freshness kick

There is nothing more refreshing than a glass of Musgo. Except for a swim in the river after a game of beach volleyball. A summer without this fruity Verdejo? That would be like strolling by the lake without ice cream.

«Beyond Red-White Thinking»

Orange Wines open up whole new worlds of taste

More and more often you can find them in wine bars and gourmet restaurants: Orange Wines. They could be described as white wines that behave like red wines. They have the tangy aromas of a white wine, but are rich, opulent and tannic like a red wine. Quasi neither fish nor bird. So it's understandable that at first we're thrown by this. We don't know it and can't classify it. But it's worth sticking with it, because it opens up completely new worlds of taste.

What sounds like a new experiment is in all probability the most original form of wine. The Vespaiolo from Contrà Soarda wants to tie in with this fact. Its name «121 b.C.» refers to the first surviving vintage wine in the history of mankind. This wine year became a myth in ancient Rome: «The legendary vintage 121 B.C. is something like the mother of wine,» says the young winemaker Eleonora Gottardi, «what we are striving for with our product is a return to the origins with the knowledge of today.» Thus, everything «newfangled» such as temperature control or additives of any kind is abandoned. Are you ready to get to know wine in a completely new way?

«Like a sip of Sunrise Avenue!»

Samu Haber's latest release is a wine

Could you say «no» if Samu Haber, the lead singer of Sunrise Avenue, offered you a bottle of wine? Neither could we! That's why the smart Finn has recently been making us melt with a wine. Before Samu made his musical breakthrough with his band in 2006, he lived in Spain for four years. There he experienced turbulent times, ran sometimes dubious businesses, but also discovered his love for Spanish wines. When asked what fascinates him about wine, he says in his mischievous way, «Has anyone ever had a great idea while drinking milk?»

When Sunrise Avenue's farewell tour had to be postponed because of the pandemic, Samu did not remain idle. First he wrote an autobiography, in which he tells relentlessly honest about his past, about the highs and lows in his life, about his dreams, but also about depression and burnout. Whether it was while looking back on his life that he got the idea to make his own wine? Certainly not while drinking milk, as we now know... «I dreamed of having my own wine for years,» Samu says. He says his red wine goes well with singing, dancing, and is the perfect companion for dinner with friends or hours of talking about life. «It's perfect for that moment when someone very special is holding you a little too tightly by candlelight.» Okay, Samu...we're completely sold. Especially since the wine is top notch in terms of taste. It will accompany us in the future as faithfully as «Fairytale Gone Bad» or «Hollywood Hills»!
