About the wine
Steeped in history, Clos des Papes, one of the region's outstanding wineries, takes its name from one of the 24 plots adjacent to the Popes Castle. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and some indigenous varieties such as Counoise and Muscardin are grown here on a total of 32 hectares. The company has been family-owned for 300 years; after the death of the founder Paul Avril, his son Paul-Vincent took over the overall management of the estate in 2009 after many years of working together. The wines are aged in huge barrels for 12 to 15 months, and around 100,000 bottles are produced, 80 percent of which are exported. The Clos de Papes is considered one of the most respected sources for classic, durable, elegant châteauneuf.
