USA

Rapid rise in viticulture

After France, Italy and Spain, the United States occupies 4th place in no less than two rankings: both in terms of the volume produced and the size of the cultivated vineyard area. The Americans are directly behind the three European countries. This is a remarkable achievement for a country whose wine history is still quite young: it was only at the beginning of the 19th century that the potential of the native vines was discovered and used in a targeted manner. Today, all 50 states are active in viticulture, with the most productive regions being California, Washington, Oregon and New York State. In California, the Chardonnay grape variety is the most widely grown, accounting for about 20% of the annual harvest. IIn California however, almost every existing vine can be found, so also Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc are of great importance for viticulture in the region.
