About the wine

Winegrowing in Höngg has a tradition that is measured not in decades but in thousands of years. Finds from ancient times suggest that the Romans already cultivated vines here. In 1869, Höngg was the third largest wine-growing community in the canton of Zurich. After phylloxera raged, the vineyard area dropped to a few hectares, which were finally completely cleared up during the war. In 1969, the city rebuilt the distinctive Chillesteig vineyard below the Höngg church. It was the culmination of a project in which Heinrich Zweifel (1904 — 1987) was significantly involved for twelve years.
