The history of Merlot del Ticino begins in 1905. At the end of the previous century, phylloxera had destroyed almost all of Ticino's vineyards. As a result, the creation of a new wine-growing culture became necessary. The study carried out at that time showed that the Merlot grape variety was the most suitable. Today, it has grown to over 1250 hectares in 176 municipalities.
