About the wine
The Zenato family winery is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Garda, not far from the town of San Benedetto di Lugana. Here, between rolling hills, favored by the mild maritime climate, it was founded in 1960 by Sergio Zenato and today has 40 hectares of sun-drenched vineyards, most of which are planted with the white Trebbiano grape variety. The property also includes 20 hectares in the area of St. Ambrogio di Valpolicella, which Sergio and his wife Clara planted in 1975 with the classic Corvina and Rondinella grape varieties - grapes for wonderful red wines. Old inscriptions in the area mention the APASSIMENTO process and indicate that something like Ripasso wines and Amarone were pressed here 2,000 years ago. Among contemporary producers, the modern interpreters of this genre, Zenato is one of the absolute top class. Daughter Nadia and son Alberto have long since taken over the sceptre. Year after year, they create high-quality, internationally admired wines and seamlessly build on the successes of their father, who died in June 2008. Zenato has mastered old processes for making delicacies perfectly. Hand-picked Corvina, Rondinella and Sangiovese grapes are cleaned and slowly dried on bamboo mats in specially ventilated rooms. After four months, the now partially rosinized grapes are processed into a dry, highly concentrated wine: Amarone. The wine is always heavy, the high alcohol content enhances the aromas of dried fruits, cherries, plums and raisins without even appearing in taste. To further round off, the Amarone is stored at Zenato in 300-liter French and Slavonic oak barrels, followed by prolonged bottle aging. Extremely round and soft, the wine is a special experience after every good meal.
