Big Easy Chenin Blanc 2022 - Ernie Els Winery

About the wine

The hobby of South African professional golfer and national hero Theodore Ernest Els, known as Ernie, has resulted in a winery and wines of the highest quality. With every single one of his wine creations, Ernie Els proves that he can not only play world-class golf. In 1999, the idea was born to create the perfect wine in addition to the perfect shot. This is how Els founded the winery with the award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom. With wines like the “Big Easy”, Els has set himself a memorial — his agility, strength and ease of playing golf earned him this nickname. In the meantime, the winery has created several highly award-winning wine creations. The first vintage was awarded an excellent 93 out of 100 points by wine pope Robert Parker — the highest rating ever given to a South African wine.

Tasting note
The scent of the tropics... Pineapple pieces, salted mango, papaya and lime wedges float in the breeze of orange blossom, honeysuckle and the faintest whiff of summer fynbos. This exciting bouquet continues on the palate and develops into stone fruit, freshly cut peaches, fresh nectarines and zesty apple peel. The fruit envelops the mouth and is rich, with an inherent liveliness that continues into the calcareous finish.
Culinary recommendation
A lovely, summery wine, perfectly chilled and enjoyed with light, delicious dishes.
Vinification
The Chenin Blanc grapes were harvested from individually selected, low-yielding bush and trellis wines from the Perdeberg region near Paarl. The grapes were harvested by hand in the cool early morning. On the sorting table, all excess stalks and low-quality berries were carefully removed. After the grapes had been sorted, they were destemmed and slightly crushed. The wine was settled overnight and the sediment was removed the next day. After fermentation, contact with the yeast was maintained for two months, stirring the yeast every week before being withdrawn and stabilized before bottling. This wine is made in a fresh style without any oak components.
