About the wine
The picture-perfect finca Casa Castillo has 60 to 100-year-old vines, which are rooted around 800 meters above sea level in barren, rocky soils. The top wines include the 3 single-layered wines from the Valtosca, Las Gravas vineyards, the monumental Pie Franco and recently the Cru Ceron. Just 10 years ago, there was little more in the hinterland of Valencia and Alicante than those industrial-like large wineries that produced unnamed blended wines. Classic domains have emerged in recent years, which, with their top selections, have given the Levant a clear profile. These pioneering companies include José-Maria Sanchez's Casa Castillo winery. The winery is located about 100 km from the east coast in inland Spain on the “Altiplano de Jumilla” of the Jumilla Plateau. In this extremely dry climate, the Mediterranean varieties Monastrell, Garnacha, Syrah and some Cabernet Sauvignon thrive primarily.
