About the wine
The picture-book Finca Casa Castillo has 60 to 100-year-old vines that are rooted in barren, rocky soils around 800 meters above sea level. The top wines include the 3 single-vineyard wines from the Valtosca, Las Gravas vineyards, the monumental Pie Franco and, more recently, the Cru Ceron. Just 10 years ago, there was little more in the hinterland of Valencia and Alicante than those industrially operating large wineries that produced nameless blended wines. In recent years, classic domains have emerged which, with their top selections, have given the Levant a clear profile. These pioneering businesses include the Casa Castillo winery by José-Maria Sanchez. The winery is located about 100 km from the east coast in the interior of Spain on the “Altiplano de Jumilla” of the Jumilla Plateau. In this extremely dry climate, the Mediterranean varieties Monastrell, Garnacha, Syrah and some Cabernet Sauvignon primarily thrive.
