About the wine
Steeped in history, the Clos des Papes, one of the region's outstanding wineries, takes its name from one of the 24 plots adjacent to the Castle of the Popes. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and somewhat autochthonous varieties such as Counoise and Muscardin are grown here on a total of 32 hectares. The company has been family-owned for 300 years; after the death of founder Paul Avril in 2009, his son Paul-Vincent took over the overall management of the estate after years of joint work. The wines are aged in huge barrels for 12 to 15 months and around 100,000 bottles are produced, 80 percent of which are exported. The Clos de Papes is considered one of the most highly regarded sources for classic, long-lasting, elegant château euf.
