Dirk Niepoort

Poort wines are fabulous!

Niepoort's success story began with an emigration: In the 19th century, the Dutchman Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort was drawn to Portugal. In 1842, he founded a company there to trade port wine, but at that time he owned neither his own land nor his own vines. Today, five generations and 175 years later, descendant Dirk Niepoort runs the business in the Douro Valley.

Born in 1964, Dirk discovered the world of wine while studying in Switzerland. In 1987, he joined his father in the family business and ventured into great innovations. The first important step was the acquisition of their own quintas (wineries). For 25 years, the Niepoorts have been making fabulous DOC Douro wine in addition to Port. Who doesn't know it, the likeable red with Max and Moritz on the label? Thanks to a lot of hard work, passion and a pinch of mischievousness, the family business has managed to establish itself as a firm reference among Portugal's great winemakers. To be continued...
