About the wine
The Zenato family winery is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Garda, not far from the town of San Benedetto di Lugana. Here, between gentle hills, favored by the mild maritime climate, it was founded in 1960 by Sergio Zenato and today has 40 hectares of sun-drenched vineyards, which are predominantly planted with the white grape variety Trebbiano. The property also includes 20 hectares in the area of St. Ambrogio di Valpolicella, which Sergio and his wife Clara planted in 1975 with the classic grape varieties Corvina and Rondinella - grapes for wonderful red wines. Old inscriptions in the area mention the APASSIMENTO process and indicate that something like Ripasso wines and Amarones were pressed here 2000 years ago. Among contemporary producers, the modern interpreters of this gengres, Zenato ranks among the absolute top class. Daughter Nadia and son Alberto have long since taken over the scepter. Year after year, they create high-quality, internationally admired wines and seamlessly build on the successes of their father, who died in June 2008. Zenato has mastered old processes for the production of delicacies perfectly. Hand-picked grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Sangiovese varieties are cleaned and slowly dried on bamboo mats in specially ventilated rooms. After four months, the grapes, which have now been partially raisined, are processed into a dry, highly concentrated wine: Amarone. The wine is always heavy, the high alcohol content enhances the aromas of dried fruits, cherries, plums and raisins without even appearing in taste. To round it off further, the Amarone is stored at Zenato in 300-liter barrels made of French and Slavonian oak, followed by longer bottle ageing. Extremely round and soft, the wine is a special experience after every good meal.
