Rooi Olifant 2020 - Markus Schneider

About the wine

The acclaimed winemaker Markus Schneider has elevated his wine to the status of a brand and has thus written one of the most astonishing success stories in German viticulture. His rapid rise left him no time to get to know the wine world outside his home country of Germany. He made up for this with the ROOI OLIFANT. This Wine & Friend joint venture was created together with the well-known South African winemaker Danie Steytler. Not far from Stellenbosch in the Bottelary Hills, they work on Kaapzicht Estate, opposite the domestic vegetation phase in Germany. Overlooking Lion's Head and Table Mountain, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Pinotage grow there. It is named after the mighty granite rocks that have been present in the growing area for centuries, which look like fat red elephants in the evening sun.

Tasting note
Deep red color, beautiful filigree and a harmonious play of aromas. The wine varies with notes of cassis, black cherry and plum on the one hand and peppery-spicy aromas such as leather, cinnamon and cedar on the other. The fresh, balanced fruit acidity carries the wine and thus finds the perfect interplay with the velvety tannins and round wood notes.
Culinary recommendation
Zu Gruyère Burger, Ribeye Steak und Pizza mit Pilzen empfehlen Ihnen die Flaschenpöstler diesen Rooi Olifant.
Vinification
A beautiful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot and Petit Verdot. All grapes on Kaapzicht were harvested by hand, strictly separated from each other and then vinified individually in small steel tanks and new and older wooden barrels.
