Seriously Old Dirt 2021 - Vilafonté

About the wine

Hardly any other winegrowing project in recent years has attracted more attention in the trade press than Vilafonté. Even the list of people involved in this Californian-South African joint venture reads like a who's who of the international wine nobility. It is led by Dr. Phil Freese and Zelma Long, formerly Chief Viticulturist and Head of Winemaking at Robert Mondavi Winery, and Mike Ratcliffe, head of the renowned Stellenbosch Estate Warwick. Although the expectations for Vilafonté wines were already high, they clearly exceeded them once again. At Selection magazine's South Africa summit, the two top plants with the minimalistic name Series C (for a Cabernet dominated cuvée) and Series M (for a Merlot and Malbec dominated cuvée) even scored the double of the first two places.

Tasting note
The Seriously Old Dirt 2021 has a bright garnet red color. This cuvée, led by Cabernet Sauvignon, initially presents a lively expression of fruit. It unfolds with fresh plums, black raspberries, mulberries and ripe strawberries. These fruits are beautifully interwoven with subtle spicy notes of nutmeg and dried sage. On the palate, it is soft and luxurious, with a silky texture on the front palate, which expands in the middle of the palate and ends with complex fullness. A fresh acid structure gives this medium-strength wine energy. Soft, silky tannins are well integrated and allow immediate enjoyment, while the balanced structure allows good storage.
Culinary recommendation
It goes well with strong meats such as venison or beef and with various types of cheese.
Vinification
The harvest time was on average about two weeks later, due to the unusually cold and wet conditions in spring, which delayed the bud outbreak. The abundant rains continued until early summer. This resulted in a larger canopy of the vines and required additional resources to control the strong growth. The flowering was largely uniform and the fruiting was good, which gives hope for a bountiful harvest. The temperatures at the beginning of the growing season were cool to moderate and gradually warmed up towards maturity. The lack of heat waves, which normally occur in February and March, were remarkable. This meant that water resources were less strained and the grapes got little to no sunburn. We loved the flavors when tasting the harvest decisions. The berries had a soft skin, were full of flavor, lively freshness and a strong tannin structure. The harvest began in the second week of February and we were blessed with mild weather for the rest of the season. The wines of this vintage are intense in color and show a sophisticated balance and gravity. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.
