The Chocolate Block 2020 - Boekenhoutskloof

About the wine

Franschhoek, Western Cape. French immigrants brought in the 17th century winegrowing after Franschhoek. The Chocolate Block is a parade example of the “Châteauneuf-du-Cap”, like the region on the Western Cape is often called. Whether it's due to the chocolate flavors is that this Wine became a phenomenon?

Tasting note
On the nose, the Chocolate Block is deep and dark and seduces with aromas of black fruits and a hint of pepper and spices. The blueberry and blackberry aromas of the bouquet continue on the palate with aromas of dark plums, dust, graphite and cocoa nibs. The wine is concentrated and elegant, with fresh and well-integrated acidity followed by fine-grained tannins that give it an exceptional structure. Blackcurrants and milk chocolate linger on a silky finish.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with meat dishes of all kinds or spicy curries.
Vinification
The 2020 harvest was preceded by an exceptional growing season based on a cold winter in 2019, perfect conditions for the vines to rest. In spring, the early and uniform shoots led to homogeneous shoot growth, which enabled uniform fruit set and uniform ripening. However, the decisive factor is that the Swartland region had a moderate summer without major heat waves and thus the ripening period was extended. The sum of these conditions is a good sign, especially for the taste and acidity of the wines. Syrah is the predominant variety from the two wine farms in Swartland and makes up the largest part of the blend with a share of 73%. Grenache (11%) from vines from the Porseleinberg is the subtle superstar of the blend, which offers a fragrant brightness and a gastronomic texture to the wine. The moderate conditions were a welcome relief for Swartland and Cabernet Sauvignon (7%). The cooler, balanced growing season was particularly beneficial as it evokes a more elegant, old-fashioned style of the strain. In summary, 2020 is a vintage that combines exceptional balance and texture with a youthful elegance. These characteristics certainly promote a significant aging potential. The Syrah and Cinsault are aged in a combination of 2500 liter and 600 liter French oak barrels, while the Grenache matured in Demi Muids. Cabernet Sauvignon is the only component that has been 100% matured in new barrique barrels. The storage period was between 11 and 14 months, depending on the grape variety and the vineyard plot. 2982 barrels were selected for the 2020 vintage.
