Titolo Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2018 - Elena Fucci

About the wine

Torre Titolo is a country house at the gates of the village of Barile in the north of Basilicata, in the middle of vineyards and olive groves, which has guarded the history of the Fucci family for four generations. On the slopes of the extinct volcano Vulture and at 650 m altitude, Salvatore Fucci and his daughter Elena passionately cultivate one of the most important local grape varieties, the Aglianico del Vulture. When the decision was to be made in 2000 to sell the family winery, the young Elena Fucci decided to definitely change her future plans and thus save the company. She received a doctorate in oenology and from then on worked on the family estate in the rugged mountains of Basilicata. The winery first pressed its own wine in 2000 with the help of an external consultant and since 2004 on its own. It quickly became clear that a single, single-varietal wine would be made, modern but not modernist and in near-natural cultivation without any use of chemical agents. Titolo, whose Aglianico vines are 55-60 years old on average, some even up to 70 years old, has now become a great wine. With a great deal of respect for the environment, the fucci bring out the unmistakable and unique character of this wine and terroir in an optimal way. The current vintage was once again awarded 3 bicchieri in the renowned Gambero Rosso.

Tasting note
Elena Fucci has made it to the top of Italian viticulture in just a few years. She cultivates a single grape variety, the Aglianico. This is one of the Italian noble varieties on the same level as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. It thrives on the barren, volcanic soil of Vulture, the imposing volcano in Basilicata. Elena Fucci took up the inheritance of her grandfather, who in his time sold the grapes from the old vines, nurtured and tended on the terraces with dry stone walls to a merchant. Elena, with great skill and the support of her grandfather, knows how to produce a wine that represents a new dimension for this almost forgotten grape variety. The wine guide of the Italian Sommelier Association even spoke of a Copernican revolution. The Titolo, named after the place where it thrives, is of the utmost elegance and refinement, of clear, precise expression, showing both aristocratic rigor and cheerful generosity.
