It was a perfectly practical idea that provided the basis for Flaschenpost in 2006. University students and wine lovers Renzo Schweri and Dominic Blaesi were frustrated about having to spend so much time search different wine shops for their favorite wines. On top of that, delivery costs were starting to add up, but lugging heavy cases of wine around on public transport wasn't an option either. There had to be a way to use the Internet to make it easier! So the two students developed their idea of creating a place where people could easily order any wine in the world from one convenient source. An «Amazon for wine», so to speak.
They drafted their first business plan at a vineyard in Piedmont – it was just a single sheet of paper, but when it came to confidence and enthusiasm, it was hard to beat. They took it from wine shop to wine shop. Now keep in mind that as far as the Internet was concerned, it was still the Stone Age back then: Facebook was just getting started, and smartphones and Zalando didn't exist yet. Many wine retailers were still skeptical and did not believe wine could be sold over the Internet. Dominic and Renzo managed to gain the trust of about a dozen wine shops.
And with that, Flaschenpost went online in 2007 – with an already respectable selection of 2000 wines. In those early days, the two actually shipped orders from their student apartment. In the years since, the company has grown steadily, and is now the largest online wine retailer in Switzerland, with over 30,000 wines in their catalogue.
