Barolo DOCG Vigna del Gris 2018 - Conterno Fantino

About the wine

In 1982 Guido Fantino and the Conterno brothers founded the joint venture Conterno Fantino on the Bricco Bastia hill in the most wonderful view over Monforte d'Alba. Previously, as employees of a well-known winery, the young entrepreneurs had tended the family-owned vineyards at prime locations after work and sold the grapes to various producers. The new, own wines quickly became a success thanks to the concentrated know-how. In the cellar, you work with traditional (large wooden barrels) and modern elements - a combination that is skillfully implemented with great skill.

Tasting note
At the beginning of the eighties, Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino were among the young pioneers who began to turn the world of Barolo on its head. So far, they have hardly moved away from their well-groomed style, which was admired and rejected by the traditional “Barolisti”. They have perfected it and today their wines are regarded as a challenge and benchmark for a modern concept of the most famous Italian red wine. The two Baroli from the Sorì Ginestra and Vigna del Gris vineyards have become real “musts” for anyone interested in Barolo, especially for fans of the modern style. The difference between the two wines is evident with each vintage, in that Sorì Ginestra has more power and tannin-rich structure, whereas the Vigna del Gris impresses with filigree elegance, finesse and harmonious suppleness. This characteristic is all the more astonishing as the vines are adjacent to each other, on the same hilltop, which is oriented more south for Sorì Ginestra and south-south-east for Vigna del Gris.
