About the wine
The historic town of Calatayud is located at 600 m above sea level, the old vines even reach 1000 m above sea level. In the past, over 45,000 ha of vineyards were cultivated here, in the northwest of Spain with an extremely continental climate. A rugged area that is very similar to the Priory. Barren slate soils with cold nights and hot days. Today, unfortunately, it is only 2,500 ha left. Master of Wine Norrel Robertson, is committed to bringing the oldest vineyards in the region back to life. For his El Puño, a pure Garnacha, which according to the English wine magazine Decanter is one of the best in the world, he spent 6 years looking for suitable locations. The Calatayud region is, so to speak, the Rhône valley of Spain. The Grenache (Garnacha), Syrah and Viognier varieties feel incredibly at home here, and this climate suits them very much. The grapes mature very well and build up a beautiful natural freshness, which gives the wines backbone and elegance. The result is astonishingly mineral, elegant wines that scare their cousins from the Rhône. Norrel Robertson, “The Flying Scotsman” (El Escoces volante), as he is known in Spain, is also an advisor to other excellent wineries as a gifted oenologist.
