About the wine
Hacienda El Ternero is a 250-hectare “island” within the Rioja Alta with roots that date back to 1077, when the estate was part of the Santa Mario Real de Herrera Monastery. It is located at the foot of Mount Obarenes, 7 km from Haro and the adjacent Cihuri and Sajazarra, and is referred to as the “heart of the Rioja Alta.” The family currently cultivates Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Viura varieties on approximately 65 ha of cultivated land, surrounded by spruce, pinsapo and holm oak forests. The majority of the vines are over 50 years old. In a very special microclimate at 650 m above sea level and due to the particular orientation of the vineyards, grapes ripen here, which reflect the characteristic natural nature and peculiarity of this soil. Rarely has a “terroir” played such an important role. Its history, geographical location, and altitude of 650 m make the winery a very unique bodega. Below the Obarenes Mountains are the buildings that once housed the monastery, a school, a hospital and a hostel for the pilgrims of St. James and the small beautiful chapel for Our Patroness of the Virgin de la Pera. The wines express the uniqueness of the climate and the environment and, above all, of the soil; they are special, great wines. Attentive wine drinkers will discover completely new nuances in wine through the “terroir”.
