Colonia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 - Fattoria di Felsina

About the wine

If we can offer something special for Christmas 2021, it's this outstanding Sangiovese 2016 — Colonia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG. The winemaker from the Italian winery Fattoria di Felsina has absolutely mastered his craft. Style and refinement are the characteristics of this red wine, which originates in the fertile and flourishing Tuscan countryside. Flaschenpöstler tip: Combine this Sangiovese with beef or pizza.

Tasting note
The Colonia has an intensely sparkling ruby red color. On the nose, aromas of ripe plums, raspberries, cassis, violet, cedarwood, thyme and some truffles inspire. On the palate, the wine is elegant and fresh with almost scented cherry fruit, black currants, spicy notes of licorice, precious wood and herbs, and mineral notes. A refined, profound and extremely harmonious Sangiovese with good aging potential.
Culinary recommendation
It goes well with festive meals, Tuscan specialities such as bistecca fiorentina and hearty meat dishes.
Vinification
Chianti Gran Selezione Colonia is a project run by the Poggiali family for three generations. Domenico Poggiali and son Giuseppe began replanting the soils of the Colonia vineyard in 1966. However, due to the difficult and rocky soil conditions, the project was reburied in the 1980s. Grandson Giovanni took it up again in 1991 and, with the help of father and grandfather, they succeeded in completing the new plantings in 1993. The first harvest followed in 1997, but the wine was bottled separately for the first time in the 2006 vintage. The Colonia vineyard has reddish-brown soil that is rich in magnesium and iron and lies on a rock of limestone and marl. The grapes are picked by hand, carefully selected and then fermented in steel tanks. The wine is aged for 30 months in new French barriques. After bottling, the wine ages in the bottle for a further 10-12 months. A maximum of 3000 numbered bottles are filled annually.
