Tasting note
The 2019 Family Reserve Chenin Blanc opens with broad and inviting aromas of spiced yellow apples, sweet citrus and cantaloupe, soft nuances of caramel popcorn, dried hay, dusty citrus blossoms and honeysuckle. On the palate, the full and structured character of Chenin Blanc is revealed with bright, fresh fruit elements of white peach, pear skin and a wonderful mineral tension. The wine ends with a long, long-lasting finish that continues to evolve while presenting a frame of uplifting acidity and juicy fruit of yellow cherry and melon.
Culinary recommendation
Fantastic wine to pair with a Thai melon and asparagus salad.
Vinification
The Family Reserve was pressed from three different sites and soils (Decomposed Granite, Oakleaf and Duplex) in Stellenbosch, all of which contribute to the complexity of this wine. These vineyards are all over 40 years old and are unwatered bush vines. The canopy of the bush vines has been treated to ensure a cool microclimate around the grapes, without direct sunlight and without botrytis. The grapes were harvested separately between 22 and 24° Oechsle, reductively pressed and the juice received skin contact for 12 to 18 hours before settling. The wine was settled for a day and the cloudy juice was then transferred to a tank, where it was inoculated with a selected grape yeast strain. The must was then passed by gravity into 400 l French oak barrels for fermentation. We only used barrels of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th filling to protect the delicate fruit roma. The wine spent another 8 months in the barrel before we blended the components. There was no fining or filtration before bottling.
