Montepulciano

Wine of the popes

Beware, there is an acute danger of confustion here! The grape variety of the same name has absolutely nothing to do with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano. The red wine of the Montepulciano grape comes from the more southern Abruzzo and is also grown in the regions of Marche, Umbria and Puglia. The Tuscan town of Montepulciano, on the other hand, produces Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which in turn is made from the Sangiovese grape variety. The most famous wine made from Montepulciano grapes is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which must be made from at least 70% of this grape. All clear?

Recommendation: Montepulciano – the Mediterranean. Red wines made from Montepulciano grapes are colorful, down-to-earth wines, slightly spicy and high in alcohol content. They can be enjoyed young, but are also suitable for longer aging. This traditional wine goes best with dishes from its homeland: try it as an accompaniment to typical Mediterranean dishes.
