Tasting note
Another very impressive Cabernet Sauvignon. The aroma is pure and noble, dominated by cool, dark, maritime, salty notes of crème de cassis, seaweed, spicy black cherry and lively scents of crushed blackberries, star anise, cardamom, salty black licorice and a hint of creamy vanilla oak spice. The palate is very supple with a fabulously elegant texture, silky soft mineral graphite tannins, a loose, fleshy black fruit fullness in the middle part of the palate and a lot of lively, fresh acidity on the finish. This is a classic Le Riche Reserve Cabernet at its most alluring, though amazingly enough it is already so accessible, expressive and utterly delicious.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with any festive dinner.
Vinification
The vines come from vineyards in Raithby, Firgrove and Jonkershoek. The status of “reserve” is only given if the grapes and the resulting wine meet exceptional quality standards. Hand-picked grapes from older, lower-yielding vines are used. Fermentation takes place with a selected yeast strain at a controlled temperature. After malolactic fermentation in wooden barrels, the wine matures for 24 months in 225 liter French oak barrels, 85% of which were new wooden barrels.
