Rioja'n'Roll!

«Are you satisfied with 0815 wines? Neither do we! For good wines, we sometimes break the rules of the usual – like our title heroes from Artuke. We leave the paths of the old familiar – and also give wines from unknown regions a chance. The most important thing for us is exceptional quality: Whether 99 points or blank slate – we test all wines with the team and only what is completely convincing comes into the magazine.»

Bottle of Finca de los Locos Tinto from Bodegas y Viñedos Artuke

«In grapes we trust.» – Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco

The crazy success story of Artuke

If you don't happen to be a «Marqués» or can at least call a «Castillo» your own, the road to the top of Rioja is quite rocky. But to let that spoil the pleasure of making wine? Never! The two brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco don't think much of big names and regulations. They prefer to do their thing according to their own rules. The fact that they are therefore not allowed to sell their wines as «Crianza» or «Reserva» is of no concern to them. Arturo and Kike are anything but "normal" winemakers. But the name «Finca de los Locos» – meaning «estate of the crazy ones» – refers primarily to the history of their best vineyard: Arturo and Kike's grandfather bought a barren plot of land above their village of Baños de Ebro in 1950 to plant a vineyard. People couldn't understand why this «madman» was putting all his money into such a stony piece of land. All the winegrowers at that time were scrambling for the fertile lands below the village on the banks of the Ebro River. Over time, however, the stony patch of earth has turned out to be an exceptionally good terroir, producing very aromatic wines thanks to its high lime content. Their Tempranillo «Finca de los Locos» is an impressive testimony to this: This wine is so intense – it's really crazy! The good drop became an insider tip among connoisseurs and finally landed in the hands of wine critic Tim Atkin – who chose Arturo as «Young Winemaker of the Year» in 2017. James Suckling and Robert Parker followed his example and raved about the wine from the stoniest garden in Baños de Ebro. In a sense, Artuke's path to the top of Rioja was indeed very rocky – and that's definitely a good thing.

Rioja'n'Roll for a reason

Their wines steal the show from the great calibers of Rioja. We are talking about Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco – Artuke for short. However, the two rebellious young winemakers don't like to be in the limelight. They prefer to take care of their 32 small vineyards, which are spread around the Basque village of Baños de Ebro. This dispersal is labor-intensive, but it's worth it. Not only because of the special soils and the old vines, no, it's also about the pride and history of their hometown. Arturo and Kike therefore always write the name of their village or sometimes even of the vineyard on the label, even though this is against the rules of the Rioja Control Board. They cannot understand why in Rioja the origin of the grapes hardly counts and that is why everything often revolves around who has the noblest name or the most remarkable bodega. «In grapes we trust» is consequently the provocative slogan of the Rioja'n'rollers. Arturo and Kike allow nothing else to apply. In their small winery in the middle of the village, the two process their grapes into wines that easily rival the greats of Rioja. Their bodega is an inconspicuous little house that only stands out from the surrounding single-family homes at second glance. No one would think that top wines are being pressed behind this garage door. See for yourself: Enter «Artuke» in Google Street View, and you can also watch the brothers «chramping» right away! Yes, they really still do everything themselves. Their «Artuke Tinto» speaks exactly this language: A down-to-earth wine, convincing from the ground up without much fuss. Best garage rock from the Rioja, where even the noblest critics nod their heads in time!

Bottle of Branco Vulcanico from Azores Wine Company

«Cheers to the Azores!»

Portugal's «Winemaker of the Year 2018» in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean

Azores? Isn't that something about weather? In fact, most people know the name in connection with the high pressure area. Some know that it is a group of islands belonging to Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but almost no one knows the Azores as a wine region. António Maçanita wants to change that. He is a natural vinophile: at just 39 years old, he was voted «Winemaker of the Year» in Portugal. But it all started with a mishap... At 20, António had only one thing on his mind: surfing. University played second fiddle in his life. He wanted to study marine biology, but got confused with the course numbers and accidentally ended up with agricultural sciences. A nudge from fate? In any case, it pulled his sleeve in – and so today the surfer is riding the wave of success of his wines. António has found his personal challenge especially in the reconstruction of old wine landscapes. That's how he ended up in the Azores, his father's homeland. It used to be a renowned region that even supplied the Tsar's court, but phylloxera almost brought viticulture to a standstill. Yet the vineyards on the volcanic island of Pico are absolutely impressive: In order for vines to be planted at all, the island's inhabitants first had to break up the lava layer. Walls were piled up from the lava rubble. These centuries-old «currais» have protected the vines from the Atlantic winds ever since. «Our wines are unique, pure, fresh, challenging and with a pinch of salt... just like life!» says António with an emphasis that makes our mood barometer rise. His «Branco Vulcanico» is our Azores high!

Bottle of Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT Invecchiato in Barrique from TosoneBottle of Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT Invecchiato in Barrique from Tosone

One of the most concentrated Italian red wines of the year, chapeau. – Luca Maroni

Tosone gets the top score again

It's incredible! 99 points for the Tosone – and three times in a row! The fact that the wine tastes good should be known to everyone by now. We therefore wanted to investigate the question of how one can create such a wine hat trick. If you consider that a winemaker has to reckon with many unpredictable influences, such as the weather, this consistency is really impressive.

Behind the Tosone wines is a team of top-class oenologists who leave nothing to chance: For example, the soils are analyzed on an ongoing basis. In addition, in each vineyard there is a small meteorological center that stores a whole range of climatic data and transmits them online to the cellar, where they are analyzed. These are methods that one would not expect to find in Sicily. But winemaking, as we know, goes beyond technology, it needs the right «touch». Well, at Tosone experienced professionals are at work. Luca Maroni, for example, praises the «oenological clarity» of the red wine, which makes such concentration possible in the first place. The wood is also brought to just the right level. In the case of the white wine, the wine pope even becomes really rapturous: The balance of softness and crisp acidity is «of spherical perfection». We have to admit, our words at the tastings are always less chosen. More along the lines of «Mmmh, mega fine!» Conclusion: Tosone, that means oenology in perfection. «Chapeau» also from our side.

Bottle of Musgo Verdejo Rueda DO from Val de Vid

«Fresh, fresher, musgo!»

The best Verdejo in our range

May we take you on an adventure? We are in Spain, on the high plateau of Castile. An endless expanse surrounds us. No one is on the road here. And it is hot, very hot. Our throats have been dry for a long time, the sun burns mercilessly. It feels like being in the desert – but a very green one. Because we are in Rueda, the «white wine oasis» of Spain. The fact that one of the most refreshing white wines in the world is produced in this extreme place is probably no coincidence. How else to endure this heat?

The success story of the D.O. Rueda is still relatively young. It began in the 1970s, when the world-famous Rioja winery Marqués de Riscal was looking for an area to grow high-quality white wines – and found it in Rueda. Since then, the success of Verdejo has continued unabated. When the wines are carefully crafted, they have a unique fruity acidity. One who knows how to produce Verdejos of exceptional quality is Jose Antonio Merayo of the Val de Vid winery. His «Musgo» tastes incredibly intense of apple and grapefruit, fruit and acid harmonize perfectly. At this price a sensation! By the way, this wine is a true multi-talent: whether spontaneous tapas with friends, elegant dinner with the treasure or simply a glass at the end of the day – it always delivers the perfect freshness. We find: A bottle of «Musgo» belongs in every fridge!

Bottle of Riccorosso Appassimento Puglia IGT from Riccorosso

«Tutti a tavola!»

Riccorosso celebrates the hospitality of the south

Viva la Tavolata! There is nothing better for the heart and stomach than the southern Italian way of being together. At the center is a large table, richly set with various bowls and plates, from which everyone can help themselves to their heart's content. But what it's really all about is the conviviality. The conversations, the stories, the laughter. The beautiful feeling of belonging and being welcome.

When it comes to food, simple dishes that can be prepared quickly and in advance are in demand. So it's no wonder that Tavolata is becoming more and more popular here in Switzerland, too: After all, few people have enough time and talent to cook multi-course meals for guests. But it would be a shame to forego invitations because of this. The uncomplicated form of the Tavolata fits perfectly. For us, the Flaschenpost team, the southern Italian form of inviting guests is already firmly established. Our bosses always cook Christmas dinner for the whole company. Therefore, it was a matter of the heart for us to find a perfect Tavolata wine. And so we now have a new member in the Flaschenpost family: It's called «Riccorosso», it's a full-bodied southern Italian, warm and rich, made with love, goes with many things and – last but not least – at a price where you don't have to think twice about opening another bottle. Because in the end everyone should go home with a full belly and a full heart.
