Syrah on Shale 2021 - Gabrielskloof

About the wine

Graceful and fertile landscapes of the coastal region give us these grapes, from which the winemaker from the South African winery Gabrielskloof conjures up this red wine with refinement and sensitivity. If we can offer something special for Christmas 2018, it's this powerful Shiraz 2015 Syrah on Shale. Flaschenpöstler tip: Pair this Shiraz with game or roasted vegetables.

Tasting note
Depth and intensity on the nose, with blue flowers, blackberries and grilled meat reminiscent of a coté rotie. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with darker fruits such as cassis, kalamata olives and black pepper. The lively acidity balances the weight of the fruit and ensures a long, complex finish that promises good ripening.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with hearty meat dishes.
Vinification
The grapes come from a single Bokkeveld slate vineyard on the Gabriëlskloof property. A high clay content enables excellent water storage and a resulting ripe fruit profile in wine. Another factor that has a significant impact on our terroir is wind, and this vineyard location is fully exposed to the southeast wind and provides just enough stress for the vines to show their true colors. The grapes were picked by hand and brought directly to our cold room in small lie boxes, where they stayed overnight. Around 50% of the harvest was destemmed, the rest remained as whole grapes. The wine was fermented spontaneously in small, open fermentation containers and left on the skins for a long time after fermentation. The wine aged in 500-liter barrels for 14 months, using 10% new French oak.
